1945 – Guitarist Chris Dreja, a founding member of the Yardbirds, is born in Surbiton, Surrey, England.
1945 – Guitarist Vince Martell of Vanilla Fudge is born in New York City.
1947 – Black Oak Arkansas bassist Pat Daugherty is born in Jonesboro, Ark.
1950 – Born on this day, Jim Peterik, guitar, keyboards, vocals, Ides Of March and Survivor.
1963 – In Birmingham, England, the Beatles dress up as policemen in order to escape a crowd of fans.
1965 – The Velvet Underground makes its performance debut at a high school dance in Summit, N.J.
1969 – The Doors’ Jim Morrison is arrested for
allegedly attacking a stewardess during a flight from Los Angeles to
Phoenix. He is charged with public drunkenness and interfering with the
flight of an aircraft. The stewardess later withdrew her evidence and
charges were dropped.
1970 – Two albums called Plastic Ono Band
are released today. The first is the classic by John Lennon. The second
is the more “experimental” of the two, recorded by Yoko Ono and
featuring jams like “Why” followed by 10 minutes of “Why Not?”
1972 – Bassist Berry Oakley of the Allman Brothers Band is killed in a
motorcycle accident in Macon, Ga., three blocks from the site of Duane
Allman’s motorcycle Deaths the previous year.
1973 – Several radio stations broadcast a live Mott the Hoople show to
the nation. Later it turns out the concert was just the band’s studio
cuts with applause dubbed in.
1985 – After 18 years and several name changes, the group Starship scores its first No. 1 hit with “We Built This City,”
1986 – Pink Floyd issue a statement saying that although Roger Waters is
no longer with the band, they will continue using the name.
1997 – Metallica holds a
free concert in Philadelphia to celebrate the release of its newest
album “Re-Load.”
2003 – John Mellencamp address a class in rock
music history at Indiana University, sharing a key bit of rock ‘n’ roll
wisdom: “You’ve got to believe in yourself no matter where your dream
leads you.”
2010 – SLASH wins album of the year at classic rock honours awards
